Rats
Rodent is an orderof mammals, characterised by two continuously growing incisorsin the upper and lower jaws which must be kept short by gnawing.

Forty percent of mammal species are rodents, and they are found in vast numbers on all continents other than Antarctica. Common rodents include mice, rats, squirrels, porcupines, beavers, guinea pigs, and hamsters.

Rat and Mice cause major problems all over the world by exploiting the environment created by man. They can serve as vectors for certain pathogens and thus cause disease, such as Lassa fever, Leptospirosisand Hantavirus. Rattus rattus, and the rat flea Xenopsylla cheopis, are notorious for their role in epidemics of bubonic plague.

In Malaysia, there are two most common kinds of rodents are Norway Rats and the House Mouse.

Type of Rats

House Mouse

The House mouse (plural: mice) is a small mammal belonging to the order of rodents. The best known mouse species is the common house mouse (Mus musculus). Mice can at times be harmful rodents.

The house mouse is considered one of the most troublesome and economically important pests in the Malaysia. House mice live and thrive under a variety of conditions in and around homes and farms. House mice consume food meant for humans or pets. They contaminate food-preparation surfaces with their feces, which can contain the bacterium that causes food poisoning (salmonellosis). Their constant gnawing causes damage to structures and property, damaging and eating crops, spreading diseases through their parasites and feces.

Primarily nocturnal animals, mice compensate for their poor eyesight with a keen sense of hearing, and rely especially on their sense of smell to locate food and avoid predators.

Norway Rat

The Norway, or brown, rat lives both as a commensal in close association with man and in the feral state, chiefly where vegetation is tall and rank and affords adequate protection. They thrive well where human discard excess food including garbage dumps and sewer. They have established well on the drain, and moving along drain from settlement to settlement, principally in basements, on the ground floor, or in burrows under sidewalks or outbuildings. They appear to be most common about feed stores, chicken houses, and garbage dumps. Although more at home on the ground, these rats are adept at climbing and have been observed traveling along telephone wires from one building to another. In places they become exceedingly numerous and destructive.

They feed on a variety of items including both plant and animal materials. All sorts of garbage appear to be welcome, but their main stay is plant material. Grains of various sorts are highly prized. When established around poultry houses, they feed extensively on eggs and young chickens. They even have been known to kill lambs and young pigs!
